The expedition “The Viking Journeys – 1,000 Years of History Across 80,000 Kilometers” is a unique, long-term exploration and documentary project carried out under the patronage of National Geographic Polska and Leica Camera Poland. The initiative combines science, history, and modern visual storytelling, aiming to reconstruct and reinterpret the routes of Viking expansion across Europe. 

The project involves a multi-year expedition covering a total distance of over 80,000 kilometers and spanning at least 17 countries. The journey is undertaken using the legendary expedition vehicle, the Land Rover 110 Defender, making it the longest undertaking of its kind to retrace Viking routes across the European continent. 

The route has been developed based on the latest scientific research in archaeology, ethnography, and cultural anthropology, as well as analyses of Scandinavian sagas. As a result, the expedition not only visits key locations associated with Viking presence but also interprets them within a broader historical and cultural context. The project highlights the dynamics of Norse expansion, their influence on the development of Europe, and the significance of their legacy in shaping modern societies. 

During the expedition, major archaeological sites, artifacts of material culture, and locations of particular symbolic importance are documented. The project also explores the daily lives of the Vikings, their beliefs, rituals, and social structures. An important element of the initiative is the presentation of traces of Viking traditions in contemporary culture, as well as an analysis of the connections between the history of Poland and the heritage of the Nordic world. 

Thanks to the support of media and technological partners, the project is carried out at the highest documentary standards, combining scientific accuracy with high-quality visual storytelling. The expedition is not only a journey across geographical space, but also across more than a thousand years of history—from the Viking Age to their enduring legacy in the modern world.

Inicjatywa ta łączy naukę, historię i nowoczesną narrację wizualną, podejmując próbę odtworzenia i reinterpretacji szlaków ekspansji Wikingów na przestrzeni całej Europy. 

Projekt zakłada kilkuletnią ekspedycję o łącznej długości przekraczającej 80 000 kilometrów, obejmującą co najmniej 17 państw. Wyprawa realizowana jest przy użyciu legendarnego samochodu wyprawowego Land Rover 110 Defender, co czyni ją najdłuższą tego typu peregrynacją odtwarzającą trasy wikińskich podbojów na kontynencie europejskim. 

Trasa została opracowana w oparciu o najnowsze badania naukowe z zakresu archeologii, etnografii oraz antropologii kulturowej, a także analizy sag skandynawskich. Dzięki temu ekspedycja nie tylko odwiedza kluczowe miejsca związane z obecnością Wikingów, lecz także interpretuje je w szerokim kontekście historycznym i kulturowym. Projekt ukazuje dynamikę ekspansji nordyckich wojowników, ich wpływ na rozwój Europy oraz znaczenie ich dziedzictwa w kształtowaniu współczesnych społeczeństw. 

W ramach wyprawy dokumentowane są najważniejsze stanowiska archeologiczne, artefakty kultury materialnej oraz miejsca o szczególnym znaczeniu symbolicznym. Ekspedycja przybliża również codzienne życie Wikingów, ich wierzenia, rytuały oraz struktury społeczne. Istotnym elementem projektu jest także ukazanie śladów tradycji wikińskiej obecnych we współczesnej kulturze oraz analiza powiązań między historią Polski a dziedzictwem świata nordyckiego. 

Dzięki wsparciu partnerów projekt realizowany jest na najwyższym poziomie dokumentacyjnym, łącząc rzetelność naukową z wysokiej jakości narracją wizualną. Wyprawa stanowi nie tylko podróż przez przestrzeń geograficzną, ale również przez ponad tysiąc lat historii – od epoki wikingów po ich współczesne dziedzictwo.
